a child's garden

The project was developed following a request from Newry and Mourne district council. The horticultural team wanted to create a garden that involved local children in its design and creation. The waste site in Newry was developed and transformed into a welcoming, immersive environment containing a meandering river-like word path, an array of plants, site-specific sculptures and children’s original artwork. A space to play and rest, the garden is a capsule for reverie that is worlds away from the nearby busy urban stream. The overall success of the project reinforces the significance of the role that art can play in the vitality and development of a place, and the positive impact that can have on the wider community. The eco art park will become a permanent exhibition space and will also host a range of original performances as well as being a garden site for the city’s children and families to enjoy all year round.
