artist's statement
My work has always revolved around the collective and its concerns.
From first year of this course I have investigated the relationship
between the multiple and the individual focusing on the over indulgence
of any particular thing and its consequences on the individual and on
society.
This year my work has evolved to focus on the figure. I began to
research crowds and their behaviour and the behaviour of the individual
within them. I was curious to find out the pivotal turning point, both
in the individual and in the collective where one action can have both
devastating and constructive outcomes. Using the medium of printmaking
I repeated a drawn image and arranged it to form a pattern. This was a
personal search for order and familiarity in a foreign concept. By
referencing wallpaper through the installation of the piece I
wished to bring this familiarity to the viewer, subsequently this led
me to focus
more readily on the individual. I intended to let the viewer to search
for his or her own understanding (pattern) within the crowd. I resolved
to draw each person individually with no repetition of imagery. The
tightly packed composition of individuals and the omission of
perspective within the crowd will lead the eye to more readily search
for a pattern of reasoning.
